Wednesday Can-Am Late Models: Coffey Dominates at Bowman-Gray; Baumann Takes Win With Final Lap Tap

As expected, it was a rough-n-tumble night at the legendary bullring of Bowman-Gray Stadium, though not nearly as messy as expected. Points leader Rich Coffey would put the Reed’s Ginger Brew Toyota on point, but Qualifying amongst the top 5 was razor-close.

Race 1 was, frankly, a bit of a bore, with Coffey leading the entire 35 laps to take the win–though Cameron Wagner kept him honest, getting a nose in on a few occasions. After the last restart however, it was obvious Wagner had lost a bit of a step, having got his tires a bit too hot. As a result he fell into the clutches of Culbert’s NAPA Chevy, who was able to get a look at him a few times heading into Turn 3, but could not seal the deal, settling for third. Baumann and Smith would round out the top 5.

Race 2 was a bit more interesting thanks to a random field inversion, placing Glenn Corliss’ Gosling’s Toyota on pole alongside Brandon Smith. Smith would get a terrible exit out of Turn 2 on the green, getting way sideways; Culbert would make the slightest contact as a result, but it was enough to send the Toyota for a spin and bring out the first caution. Sherman Baumann would take advantage, slipping by both on the inside to sit second.

The rest of the race would consist of Corliss putting on a solid defensive driving display, still seeking his first stock car victory since way back in 2010. He even survived a couple of late race caution restarts. But unfortunately, the tightness of Bowman-Gray would rear its ugly head in the final three laps, Baumann searching anywhere for a way around, only to make just the slightest of contact with the veteran’s rear bumper exiting Turn 2. He would spin down into the infield, ending his shot at the win and promoting the hillclimb.org Toyota to the front. Culbert would make an optimistic dive on him for the win at Turn 1 on the final lap but couldn’t close the deal. Coffey would wind up third, leading a Team EVOL run out of the top 5 with Smith and Lory.

Up next, the polar opposite–it’s the high banks of Bristol!
